Religious - Deseret Evening News Article, 15 October 1890

NEW YORK, . — The Inde- pendent will publish tomorrow arti- cles received by telegraph from President Woodruff of the Mormon Church, and Governor Thomas of Utah, concerning the action of the Mormon conference on October 6th, forbidding polygamy. President Woodruff says: "The action of Congress is conclusive. The Church has no disposition to violate the laws or defy the gov- ernment. A revelation of God re- quires us to obey the constitutional laws of the land. Judge Zane has recognized the action of the Church as sincere and final, and has re- scinded the rule excluding Mormon aliens from naturalisation." GOVERNOR THOMAS says: "The manifesto of the presi- dent of the Church has now been confirmed by conference. It comes with the force of a new revelation, and whatever doubt may have ex- isted as to the purpose and effect of the manifesto as first sent out, they now seem removed. The Gentiles rejoice that the contest, begun so many years ago against polygamy, has finally triumphed, for they be- lieve that never again will plolyga- my flourish on American soil. This is the most important event that has occured in the Mormon Church in years, and it is believed will result in greatly advancing the material interests and prosperi- ty of this Territory."
