Letter from David Candland, 10 October 1897
Chester. . Dear Brethren The First presidency of the Church of LD J. C. of L. D. S. Circumstances of a peculiar nature has occurred that forces me reluctantly to over- step the bounds of propriety and ask a repetition of your favor of 2 tons of ^lucerne^ hay as per your order of last year. Arguments, reasons are perhaps useless with you who have passed a life perhaps in some particulars as checkered as my own. Thanks to prest Young and prest Taylor and Z C M I I was enabled to give my 3 families all the property their kindness had enabled me to accumulate. A debt I can never forget or repay to those men. I left myself solely my horse and buggy which affords me some pleasure to visit other towns and people. hence my desire to have hay my sole feed for my horse. Oct 15 [18]97 finds me at the 78th Mile Stone, standing on The Divide looking back over the tortuous path I have come up to this and looking Yonder to the other shore.
